Tucked high in the Italian Alps of Lombardy, Livigno, Italy and the surrounding Valtellina Valley are one of northern Italy’s most rewarding alpine destinations. With dramatic mountain scenery, world-class skiing, charming villages, scenic rail journeys, and a unique food and wine culture, the region offers travelers a great blend of adventure and authentic Italian experiences.
I recently had the opportunity to visit Livigno and the Valtellina Valley with a group of travel advisors, where we met with the local tourism board and the owners of several area hotels to better understand the destination. These visits always provide valuable insight beyond what most travelers see, and it was immediately clear why this part of the Italian Alps continues to grow in popularity.
During our stay we were hosted at the beautiful Lac Salin Spa & Mountain Resort, one of Livigno’s standout alpine hotels, known for its mountain views, terrific restaurants, and excellent spa facilities. It was the perfect base for exploring the region and experiencing the alpine lifestyle that defines this part of Italy.
Livigno: The “Little Tibet” of the Italian Alps
At over 6,000 feet in elevation, Livigno sits in a spectacular high-altitude valley surrounded by peaks of the Rhaetian Alps. Because of its altitude and dramatic landscape, it is often called the “Little Tibet of the Alps.”
Livigno hosted several events for the 2026 Winter Olympics, further reinforcing its reputation as a serious destination for winter sports. Despite this global attention, the town still feels authentic, relaxed, and deeply connected to the surrounding mountains.
Like to shop? One feature that makes Livigno unique is that shopping is duty-free. Visitors can shop for ski equipment, fashion, cosmetics, and gourmet Italian products at tax-free prices, which adds a lively energy to the village. After a day on the slopes or hiking trails, strolling through the pedestrian streets and shops is part of the experience.
Skiing in Livigno
I have a lot of clients that love to snow ski, and I’m here to tell you that skiing in Livigno is exceptional. The resort offers more than 115 kilometers of slopes across two mountains, with wide runs, modern lifts, and beautiful alpine views.
One thing I immediately noticed was how enjoyable the terrain feels. The runs are long and spacious, lift lines are typically short, and multiple gondolas make it easy to move between areas of the mountain.
Beyond downhill skiing, Livigno is also ideal for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, winter hiking, and outdoor wellness experiences. The atmosphere is lively but never overwhelming, making it a wonderful destination for both serious skiers and travelers who simply enjoy being in the mountains.
Summer in the Valtellina Valley
While Livigno is famous for winter sports, the Valtellina Valley in summer is increasingly a playground for outdoor travelers. Currently about 35% of the visits occur in the summer months. The city is making enormous efforts to entice more warm weather visits.
Hiking trails wind through alpine meadows and mountain ridges, cycling routes follow scenic valleys and challenging mountain passes, and lakes around Livigno offer opportunities for boating and relaxing in nature.
For adventure seekers, activities like mountain biking and hang gliding provide unforgettable views of the Alps. Waterfalls fed by snowmelt add to the dramatic landscape during the warmer months.
It is an ideal destination for active couples, families, and travelers who love combining outdoor adventure with Italian culture.
Charming Alpine Towns
The Valtellina Valley is filled with beautiful towns that make it worth exploring beyond Livigno itself. As we traveled through the valley, the landscape transitioned from alpine villages to steep terraced vineyards and historic towns, giving visitors a variety of experiences.
We stayed in Tirano (which deserves more than 1 night) serving as our gateway to one of the most scenic rail journeys in Europe, the Bernina Express.
The Bernina Express
One of the most unforgettable experiences in the region is riding the Bernina Express, the famous scenic train that runs from Tirano to St. Moritz in Switzerland.
The line was completed in 1910 and the Express tourist trains began service in 1973. The route climbs through the Alps, passing glaciers, mountain lakes, and spectacular bridges. The journey itself is part of the destination and is widely considered one of the most scenic train rides in the world.
For travelers exploring northern Italy, it is an easy and memorable way to experience both Italy and Switzerland in a single day.
Nebbiolo Wines of the Valtellina Valley
The Valtellina wine region is one of Italy’s most fascinating alpine wine areas. Vineyards are carved into steep terraced slopes that have been cultivated for centuries, creating a landscape as beautiful as it is historic.
The wines here are produced primarily from Nebbiolo grapes, the same varietal used in Barolo and Barbaresco. In Valtellina, the grape is known locally as Chiavennasca, and the alpine climate gives the wines a distinctive elegance and character.
One of the wine stops was at La Gatta Triacca, boasting a relaxing terrace and terrific wines (yes, we bought some). For wine lovers, visiting small wineries in the valley offers the chance to experience these wines in the place where they are grown, surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery.
